Postdoctoral positions
Innovative, basic research in an industry environment
The Presidential Postdoctoral Program provides talented scientists with a unique opportunity to perform innovative, basic research in a pharmaceutical company, while supporting flexibility in their future career options in academia or industry. We encourage applications from candidates who wish to pursue a career as academic faculty as well as candidates interested in industry careers.
Info
Scientific training, mentoring, and opportunities
Postdoctoral scholars design their own research plan, receive guidance from two mentors (a Principal Investigator at Novartis who serves as the primary mentor and an academic faculty member), and are expected to present their work at major research conferences and publish their results in leading peer-reviewed journals.
To view selected postdoc publications, please visit the Publications tab above.
Postdocs also have regular opportunities to present their work within Novartis and interact with NIBR scientific leaders. Appointments are for up to 4 years. Our postdocs go on to lead research groups in industry and academia and work in a variety of science-based, non-research positions.
Postdocs may conduct research at one of our global sites:
- Basel, Switzerland,
- Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States,
- East Hanover, New Jersey, United States,
- Emeryville, California, United States,
- Horsham, England,
- Shanghai, China,
- Siena, Italy, or
- Singapore.
The application: eligibility and interviews
Eligibility:
Graduate students in the last year of completing their doctoral work and postdoctoral scholars nearing completion of their first postdoctoral training period (within two years of obtaining their Ph.D.) are eligible to apply.
Interviews:
If selected, the candidate will have an initial interview with a prospective mentor and a member of the presidential postdoctoral program team. The second stage includes a full-day, on-site interview, during which the candidate conducts a research seminar and meets NIBR research investigators and current postdoctoral fellows.
Online application
When to apply:
Please allow 4 months for the application review and interviews.
Overview:
To apply to the Presidential Postdoctoral Program, refer to the Mentor Profiles and identify one or two mentors whose research matches your interests. You must either apply to work with a mentor with an available postdoc position or describe a specific research question that you wish to pursue and why it is important, so that we may identify an appropriate mentor.
As of Tuesday, 26 February 2013, we will not be able to consider applications that mention only general areas of interest (e.g. “Oncology” or “Wnt pathway”). Applications made prior to this date will continue to be considered for all available postdoctoral positions; you do not need to re-apply.
